Tom Brady has had a storybook career. From a late-round pick to the Greatest of All Time, you really couldn’t write it any better. Having grown up watching Brady play with the Patriots, we were ecstatic when ESPN asked us to help out with graphics and animations for their latest piece on the Tampa Bay Quarterback.
Ahead of Brady’s first game at SoFi Stadium, Chris Connelly authored “Oh the Places You’ll Throw,” a Dr. Seuss-inspired tribute to the record number of stadiums he has played in. Tasked with bringing the video to life, we first brought in an illustrator to draw Brady and some fun backgrounds, matching the tone of the text with childlike visuals. We animated on the big text overlays as if the viewer were reading along in a children’s book. For the animation style, we kept it really simple, with small movements and flips of the ball, to keep things light without distracting from the message.
Another huge addition to the video were the transitions between scenes. For a wipe, we used an animation similar to an old flip-book, adding action to each transition while also enhancing the feeling of reading a Dr. Seuss book about the NFL great. A fun segment like this requires all elements to be in sync to really deliver, and we were thrilled to do our part to successfully bring it to life.
