After a few Moodboard Mondays in a row where we couldn’t really talk about the project, we’re excited to show off a moodboard from one of our most recent projects: “Oh, The Places You’ll Throw” for ESPN. For this project, we had to find inspiration from three key places: SoFi Stadium, Tom Brady, and of course, Dr. Seuss. We needed to fit the pieces together to find just the right balance in the segment, and our moodboard certainly helped organize our thoughts.
Visually, we obviously leaned pretty heavily on “Oh The Places You’ll Go.” The way text was structured, backgrounds were layered, and characters moved were all incredibly important. But of course, SoFi Stadium and Tom Brady were the key visual elements of our actual project, so we had to figure out how to incorporate their distinctive looks into the whimsical, Seussian style.
For SoFi Stadium, we really honed in on broad, pulled back photos that incorporated the full interior and exterior of the stadium. The domed roof and outdoor water feature were interesting looks, and since the stadium was serving as a background, we matched up these unique features with the style we saw in the book. As for Brady, we needed to see all the facets of his game: his calm and cool demeanor, his mid-game intensity, and obviously his throwing motion. These different looks allowed us to turn the GOAT into a character you would see in a Dr. Seuss book.
When going for such a distinct style, a moodboard really comes in handy to put all the pieces together. And now, you can see a little bit more clearly how we found the inspiration to bring “Oh The Places You’ll Throw” to life!
